Portable, Failsafe Nuclear Power?

A revolution in nuclear power plant design has promise to completely revamp the current state of nuclear power as leaky, dangerous, massive, and entombed in huge, steam gushing concrete towers. A pebble bed reactor (PBR), though it’s not yet been built, can be as small as a bread truck, just as mobile, and as safe as an x-ray machine. The design of the PBR is originally from Germany, but production there was hampered by politics. Instead, companies in the United States, South African, and China are all working on getting PBRs into production.

Keeping Nuclear Power Simple

The genius of a PBR is in its simplicity, and the unique form of its fuel. Radioactive material such as Plutonium is formed into a ball, and that ball is then put into another ball composed of materials that prohibit neutron flow, such as graphite. The ‘pebble’ is just smaller than a tennis ball. The heart of the reactor is a bin that is filled with these pebbles. Once you have enough pebbles together, you will get a nuclear chain reaction, which causes heat. As the pebbles expand with heat, the distance between each piece of plutonium in the pebble increases, and the flow of neutrons goes back down. The system is cooled with gas that flows through the spaces between the pebbles. The gas powers turbines that make power.

Safe Nuclear Power

A PBR has no means of catching on fire, it doesn’t require the massive water cooling of current nuclear power plants, and since the reaction is controlled by the temperature of the materials, which can be controlled by the coolant itself, there is no means of overwhemling the cooling system. The new kind of reactor will be scalable, so that a small one could run a single city, and a large one could power a small country. It is a closed system that does not vent to the atmosphere. And in the case that the PBR is breached to its core, air itself works as an efficient cooling material.
